Preaching is always a necessity, for preaching is inextricably linked to the life of the church. It was the proclamation of the good news that brought the church into being. Only the same proclamation can keep life in the church. The record of Christian history has been that the strength of the church is directly related to the strength of the pulpit.

Those words were written ages ago by a famous preacher named John Broadus and I could not agree more about the potency of preaching. While I do affirm the importance of strong discipleship programs, heartwarming music ministry, and relevant youth ministry, there is no greater power in the church than the living sermon. Worship is the first order in the church and the sermon is the most critical component of the service.

Dear Ben,

This is not a question that will change the foundation of my prayer life or anything, but it often pops up in the back of my mind when I pray. It is about forgiveness. When I do something that upsets my wife, I apologize and ask her to forgive me. The next time I do something stupid again, I apologize and ask her to forgive me. And so on… Often when people pray (and I do this myself), we ask God to forgive us of our sins. It struck me a few years ago that God has already forgiven me. I believe that the day I became a Christian and accepted that the Blood of Christ paid the price for all my sins (past, present and future), I was forgiven. Forever. Done. Continue reading »
